This course focuses on how to design and implement modern foreign/second language instruction materials. We look at language acquisition issues as well as pedagogical issues. Participants are also asked to design and implement a segment of instruction. Some of the topics to be discussed are:
- What is languaging? How is the work of materials design deeply connected with the social and relational?
- Approaches to language education and models of languaging
- Making and measuring meaning: Input, output, and assessment
- Focus on modalities
- Hegemonies in materials design, selection, and use
- Alternative models for materials design, selection, and use
- Tools for materials creation and dissemination
- Systems for materials critique and revision
