Any SLAT Major or Minor student interested in going on the academic job market should attend this workshop. Led by two of SLAT's alumni, Dr. Tara Hashemi (CSU Fresno) and Dr. Mariela Lopez Velarde (Seattle University), topics will cover job application tips, writing a CV, asking for letters of recommendation, online dossiers, the campus visit/interviewing with deans & provosts, negotiating contracts, and more.

Two of SLAT's 5th-year Phd candidates, Sophie Park and Rachel Floyd, will be hosting weekly SLAT Working Efficiency Sessions (WES) this semester on Wednesday afternoons, from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm on Zoom. Any SLAT major or minor student from the University of Arizona who is at any point in their doctoral program can attend this low-stakes work session, and focus on achieving academic goals while working with and getting to know other students in the program.

Dr. Florencia Henshaw has a PhD in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she is now the Director of Advanced Spanish. Dr. Henshaw has published and presented nationally and internationally on technology integration, heritage language instruction, and proficiency-based pedagogy. Her new co-authored book, "Common Ground: Second Language Acquisition Theory goes to the Classroom," aims to help educators visualize how to put principles into action. Dr. Henshaw’s work has been recognized through a number of awards, including the Postsecondary Award for Excellence in World Language Instruction Using Technology, granted by ACTFL and IALLT, as well as two competitive campus awards at the University of Illinois: the Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence Award and the Campus Award for Excellence in Online & Distance Teaching.

First-year students will have the chance to meet with the SLAT Graduate Advisor and the Major/Minor Area Chairs, along with the SLAT Program Coordinator, to learn about how to transfer courses from MA programs to the SLAT PhD program.
